Felting a Scarf
The starting material for felted scarves is wool. Vicki uses dyed wools which have subtle to vivid colours

Laying out wool for felting onto a silk scarf
The wool for felting is selected and divided into swatches for felting. The silk scarf base is placed on a bamboo mat and the wool is carefully laid onto it.
When this is complete the laid out wool is trimmed to shape, and the scarf is ready for the felting process.

Covering felted scarves
A lace cover is carefully placed over the scarf, taking care not to disturb the wool.
Soapy water is sprinkled onto the scarf through the lace. This water is needed to enable the wool to bind to the silk as felt.

Rolling felted scarf
The scarves and the silk cover are rolled up into the bamboo mat, and the bulk of the water is forced out by rolling the mat a large number of times, forcing the wool into the fabric of the silk.

This is followed by a shrinking process which binds the fibres of the felt design firmly into the silk scarf.

And, finally, the scarf is dried, and the finished work emerges - another unique felted scarf!
