| Felting a Scarf |
| The starting material for felted scarves is wool. Vicki uses dyed wools which have subtle to vivid colours |
The wool for felting is selected and divided into swatches for felting. The silk scarf base is placed on a bamboo mat and the wool is carefully laid onto it. |
| When this is complete the laid out wool is trimmed to shape, and the scarf is ready for the felting process. |
A lace cover is carefully placed over the scarf, taking care not to disturb the wool. |
| Soapy water is sprinkled onto the scarf through the lace. This water is needed to enable the wool to bind to the silk as felt. |
The scarves
and the silk cover are rolled up into the bamboo mat, and the bulk of the
water is forced out by rolling the mat a large number of times, forcing
the wool into the fabric of the silk.
This is followed by a shrinking process which binds the fibres of the felt design firmly into the silk scarf. |
| And, finally, the scarf is dried, and the finished work emerges - another unique felted scarf! |
