Ancient Dykes on Torver High Common
1st March 2000 From Coniston along the Walna Scar road, exploring Little Arrow Moor and part of Torver High Common. This is an area of considerable antiquity, with many burial mounds and settlements, some circles, and a huge and mysterious Dyke on Torver High Common. This picture is taken standing in the dyke on Bleaberry Haws. Not always marked on OS maps, it stretches across the valley, and over the top of Torver High Common. It doesn't enclose anything, doesn't appear to defend anything, is of uncertain age, and is a physically huge mystery. What was it for?
