February 2000 The easiest way to ascend Caw is from Cairn Cross Summit,
on the road from Broughton Mills to Dunnerdale. But Caw is a fine little
mountain, and, rather like Harter Fell on the other side of Dunnerdale,
the final ascent is steep whichever direction you approach it. This wasn't
the best day to start from Cairn Cross summit - there was a junior motocross
rally going on with tiny motorbikes hurtling in all directions. As we turned
right from Park Head Road into Long Mire the hideous noise began to fade,
and was lost almost completely as we climbed Caw. I am beginning to sound
like a fogey - but should the hills be alive with the sound of motorbikes?
