March 2000 From Coniston along the Walna Scar road, exploring Little
Arrow Moor and part of Torver High Common. This is an area of considerable
antiquity, with many burial mounds and settlements, some circles, and a
huge and mysterious Dyke on Torver High Common. This was a day of exceptional
clarity, warm in the sun, chilly in the shade. The picture shows Coniston
Old Man from Bleaberry Haws, with an ancient burial mound in the grass
on the lower right. Very many of these mounds have excellent views. I think
they must have felt as we do about the Lake District. Perhaps they are
a Bronze Age version of memorial seats or scattered ashes!
