April 2000 On our way back from Seathwaite we stopped at Cairn Cross
Summit on the road to Broughton Mills. The name is due to the many ancient
cairns on or close to the summit - possibly over twenty! This cairn
may have been a burial mound - it has certainly been broken into, probably
by treasure hunters, as have so many in the area. This area is popular
with motocross enthusiasts, and we saw a youngster ride his bike right
through the middle of this cairn! He wouldn't know what it was - other
than a challenging obstacle - probably his father didn't either. But surely
we should look after our heritage better than this?
