July 1999 The Borders range of mountains is largely the featureless
sort of big hill area that gives you the advantages of solitude, but which
makes me yearn for the occasional crag. The area above the Grey Mare's
Tail (NT184147) north-east of Moffat is a wonderful exception. In a way
it is a cheat calling this photo the Grey Mare's Tail, because the waterfall
of that name is actually round the corner. But I thought you might
like to see the start of the walk to the mountains beyond, where the paths
lead along the right-hand side of the valley.
