Appleby -  Church of St. Lawrence
Appleby, on the Settle to Carlisle line is a small market town situated ar the important meeting poit of the north-south Eden valley and the Stainmore gap - one of the most important east-west passes across the pennines. It has been an important junction for thousands of years, not only for the Romans, but even for the glaciers in the last Ice Age! Once the county town of Westmorlans (R.I.P.)  it is now a bustling market town.
