September 2002 - The Calf is the highest point of the Howgil Fells, with
considerable views in every direction. And, when you have finally slogged
your way to the upper levels, you are rewarded with gentle gradients and
easy paths to enjoy the views to the full! There are tedium aspects to
some ascents of the Howgills, but we came up the (initially very steep)
ascent from Cautley Spout, which is interesting all the way and highly
recommended if you don't mind steep bits!
