Stage 1 Borrowdale Wood to Whinfell repeater station
There is a small space for parking cars (about 6) at the entrance to Borrowdale Wood (NY616016). M6 travellers need to leave the M6 at Junction 38,  and follow the A685 (Kendal) road south for about 3.5 Km then, at a crossroads by Low Borrowbridge, take the lane heading west into Borrowdale. You enter the woods through a gate (please close it) and, at the right time of day, may be obstructed by multicoloured sheep expecting food.
Multicoloured sheep
You walk on the track/road through beautiful and ancient woodland and emerge with a rusty old barn on your right. Carrying on up a hill you then see a bridge (NY598015), which is your opportunity to miss the track leading off on the left just after the bridge. Take this track. It soon forks, and you take the right hand track and steadily climb.

Note - the track here is not strictly the right of way bridleway, which leaves the road slightly later at NY594014, and joins the track at NY595013. However it does seem to be the main route in use, and some parts of the bridleway are completely invisible.

As you climb the hill, after passing through a gate at NY595013, the official bridleway crosses the track, but there is no trace of it on the left (it should follow the wall), and the terrain is extremely boggy. I have followed this in the past with considerable difficulty, now made even worse by new fencing. The simple thing to do is to follow the track up the hill which, in theory at least, is soon joined by the bridleway at NY593009. After this there is no further debate about the status of the track, and, as you climb,  you can soon enjoy magnificent views of upper Borrowdale to your right.
You follow the track, from which there are no deceptive forks, through another gate and should see the particularly attractive Whinfell repeater station in front. The track is fairly clear at all stages (except fresh snow), and, if a little boggy at times, takes you to the repeater station.
