| A Whinash walk - Around Borrowdale | |
| Stage 2 Whinfell repeater station to Mabbin Crag |
|
| This is a tricky stage - the paths by Whinfell repeater station are faint, and there are several unexpected direction changes. You walk past the repeater station (on your left) and briefly follow its access road south, taking the less than obvious path off to the right (A) at about NY584002. The path heads more or less in the direction of Whinfell Beacon and you should soon see the stile (B). Head straight towards Whinfell Beacon (the obvious big rounded hill in front) towards a gate (C) on a track. Pass through this gate and continue along the track. If you are feeling strong you can climb Whinfell Beacon (472m NY573003) for fine views of Kendal to Morecambe Bay - but there is still a lot to come! The track carries straight on to about NY574088 where it turns left following the wall, over the crest of the ridge. As you descend you see gate (D) on the right which you go through. |

From the gate you see the path running along the wall on the left. Castle Fell (478m NY571005) is the hill on the right. Follow the track and where it disappears over the horizon turn left still following a wall on your left. You can carry on along this path or cut across to Castle Fell, which gives you good views of the Borrowdale valley, and a chance for a quick break. |
| The next stile at about NY566017 is reached without difficulty if you are still following the wall. From Castle Fell you need to head west until you intercept the wall. Cross the stile and head slightly to the right towards the conifer plantation. |

At the plantation there is a stile and you follow a boggy but pleasant path through the plantation and up to the summit of Mabbin Crag (482m NY566022), with some good views of the lower Borrowdale valley on your right |

summit of Mabbin Crag, looking more or less west, with the Coniston and
Langdale fells on the skyline.
