| A Whinash walk - Around Borrowdale | |
| Stage 3 Mabbin Crag to Breasthigh Road | |
| From Mabbin Crag, as you look along the ridge towards the north-west, you will see a barrier of trees facing you (A). There are traces of a path, but they are easily missed. Head towards the trees veering towards the right (B), and shortly you arrive at a firebreak in the plantation (C), which you walk down towards Ashstead Fell. As you start to climb again you meet a small cliff representing the only bit of this walk where you might need to take your hands out of your pockets (other than opening and closing gates). The step up is not difficult - and won't happen again! |

Keeping towards the left of the lesser summit of Ashstead Fell at NY563027 the highest summit (469m NY 559028) is quickly reached, but the best views are from the third summit at NY558031, which is clearly marked by a cairn. Once again there are panoramic views of the Kent velley, Morecambe Bay, and the southern Lake District fells. |
| From this summit you now
descend from the end of the ridge towards the A6 road. You need to decide
something important at this stage! If you turn right on the lane at the
bottom you will have to ford Borrow Beck. Not very difficult in a dry period
but very wet indeed otherwise! Less aesthetically you can turn left and
walk down the main road, across the road bridge and to a path at NY551040
which leads you to the Breasthigh road.
The peak in the distance is High House Bank (495m NY543048) - just inside the Lake District National Park and therefore exempt from wind turbines. Note: If you don't want to walk back along the tops the track leads right down the valley to where you started - without crossing any fords! |

This is the ford across
Borrow Beck at NY555037 seen from the north side (successfully crossed
or avoided!). The Breasthigh road is a public byway, which means that motorbikes
and FWD vehicles also splash their way across here.
On foot it is easier to go downstream a short way where there is an incomplete set of small stepping stones - but watch out! They are slippery. If in any doubt go over the road bridge. |
| As you work your way up
the Breasthigh Road - a clear track - splendid views down Borrowdale appear.
You are now more than halfway through your walk, and have done most of the climbing. Why not reward yourself with lunch? |
