"The Essential Guide To The Settle & Carlisle" - Locowatch 15/1/02
| NVM Digital bring us something that many
will perhaps think should have arrived long ago. A detailed look at the
S&C, only this one's on CD-ROM!
The guide, which arrives on a single CD-ROM, is in-depth and informative and is basically several hundred internet pages stored on CD, so a connection to the world wide web is not required. It takes the format of a trip from Settle to Carlisle, initially with an introduction to the line and then commencing at Settle Junction the CD works its way up the railway in small stages. Each step is written in an easy to read and an easy to understand way, with links to other parts of the CD which provide more information on various places and landmarks mentioned. The detailed journey along the railway takes up just fourteen pages of seven hundred contained on the CD. The remainder provide the reader with information on the various villages and towns encountered the history of the line in a news format, details of the 1871 census, key events of the railway and various facts, in addition to a brief history of the Midland Railway. Whilst CD-ROMs are easier and cheaper to produce than books, they tend to lack the structure that a written presentation provides. The S&C CD-ROM handles this very well though. The use of next and back buttons allows the user to treat each screen page as a chapter and proceed through the CD in a well-ordered way. It has to be mentioned that the navigation of the guide is excellent, simple buttons afford the reader with an easy way to get about and find the information required. The CD was tested by LocoWatch on a computer novice, who managed to explore the disk without any help! If you’re an out and out railway enthusiast interested in the trains, then this product probably isn’t for you. However if you’re a keen S&C enthusiast or simply want to know more about the background to the line or the villages along the route then the Essential Guide To The Settle & Carlisle Railway is a definite must.
