ACCESS NOTE: Most of the walks are entirely on right of way paths or bridleways, but there are off-path sections in some. As far as we know there are no access restrictions in these areas but since, in early 2003, we have no "Right to Roam" legislation, we cannot guarantee that this will always be so. If confronted with an angry landowner please don't argue with him or her but apologise, and retreat to the nearest right of way path or bridleway where you have an unquestionable right to be and then find another way round.

WALKS NOTE:  Always take a 1:25 000 map with you, such as Ordnance Survey Outdoor Leisure Maps No. 10 "Yorkshire Dales, Southern Area" which cover the area. These are available locally from Tourist Information Centres, Outdoor Shops, Newsagents, Petrol Stations, etc..

GRADING WALKS

Grading is no easy matter! What can be an easy walk in fair weather can be an endless misery in driving rain. What is easy to one walker is difficult for another. To try to give some guidelines on the physical effort involved we have provided little markers for distance and terrain at the start of each walk, and quote the approximate distance walked and height climbed.

DISTANCE
Up to 5 miles or about 8 km
Between 5 and 10 miles or 8 to 16 km
More than 10 miles or 16 km
TERRAIN
Little climbing and mainly smooth underfoot
Medium climbing and/or some rough ground
Considerable climbing and/or rough ground
Walks can be easy or difficult to navigate because of clear or indistinct paths, and whether there are good landmarks or not. Likewise there are serious physical dangers on some (falling off Malham Cove for example), so we have tried to give some indication of these on our walk title pages.

But above all it is your responsibility to prepare and equip yourself properly and only to undertake walks which you feel you can do. The Malham Area, as for all the Yorkshire Dales is very pretty and beautiful but are also fatally dangerous if you do not take care.
