Unter
den Linden is a famous Boulevard in the centre of Berlin, the capital of
Germany. In English the name means "Under the Lime trees", because of the
rows of lime trees which run along it. These were first planted in 1647
with the aim of making a beautiful approach to the huge Tiergarten which
was then a hunting park. Here we see them tastefully decorated with Christmas
lights in late November 2004, and there is no longer any question of hunting
in the Tiergarten.
Unter den Linden runs eastwards
from the famous Brandenburg Gate to the Schlossbrücke, or Castle Bridge,
over the River Spree. All of it was for many years in the eastern sector
of Berlin, but now can be enjoyed by all!
