Hawkshead LD38 Hawkshead, situated between Lake Coniston and Lake Windermere (LD26, LD57, SU08), lies close to the incredibly scenic Tarn Hows (series of photos at LD40). Referring to Joan Lee's excellent book (source) Hawkshead is an Old Norse name meaning "Haukr's sheiling" (or summer hut).

There are now rather more summer huts in this picturesque village, which has obtained international fame as the (close neighbour of Sawrey) the birthplace of Beatrix Potter. It was also much loved by Wordsworth who attended the village school.

Hawkshead did not appear in the Domesday book (probably still being the occasional rather damp summer hut at that time) but in 1578 it became a parish and in 1585 the Hawkshead Grammar School (closed 1909) was founded by Archbishop Sandys.
