This
plaque is on Cowane's
Hospital (or Almshouse) in Stirling, Scotland. John
Cowane was a wealthy local trader who provided the vast sum of £2222
for its construction between 1637 and 1650. Its intended use was as a retirement
home for elderly and sickly guild members, but the rules were so strict
that some of the residents preferred to stay in their own homes! The building
has also been used as a Guild Hall, a schoolhouse, and as a hospital.
The eye-catching phrase in
the inscription is "Decayed Gild Breither" - no longer politically correct
for senior citizens! Here is the full text (with some modern commas and
capital letters):
"This hospitall was erected
and largely provyded by John Cowane, Deane of Gild, for the entertainement
of decayed Gild breither. John Cowane 1639" |
