Howgill Fells - Crook MT45 Crook (SD 665935) is a rather tidy little name for a tidy little fell at the southern limit of the Howgill Fells. According to Joan Lee the name derives from the Celtic word "cruc" meaning "hill", which it certainly is!

Crook, like Winder Fell, is not the highest Howgill at about 460 m. It has great views across to Baugh Fell and into Garsdale but the thing that distinguishes it from the other Howgills is the shape of its summit.

If one were looking for a single word to describe the Howgill summits it would be "Rounded". This is where Knott scores - it is a slightly "Pointy". Not too much - but it does also have a disproportionately large summit cairn. You can appreciate its "pointyness" to a greater extent in MT42 (Winder Fell Summit), where Crook is peeping out from behind the Trig. Point.
