Ulverston
means "Ulfarr's farm", the first part being a Norse name, while the second
is Old English or Old Norse ("The
Place Names of Cumbria" by Joan Lee). Despite the ancient name
Ulverston is largely a Georgian town, although it was given a market charter
in 1280, and there are still markets on Thursdays and Saturdays.
Ulverston has world-wide fame as the birthplace of Stan Laurel (Laurel and Hardy - of course!) and there is a Laurel and Hardy Museum to be visited. Although Ulverston is a medium sized town, and even though there is a large Glaxo factory nearby (it doesn't intrude on the town centre), Ulverston is one of the most pleasant towns you could visit. It has many fine old-fashioned small shops, although some of these are under threat due to the building of a large supermarket on the outskirts. In the days of slate mining in the Coniston Fells there was once a food riot here! It's rather hard to imagine at present. |
