Ramsons (Allium ursinum)

Ramsons, or Wild Garlic as it is also known, is found in damp woods and shady places throughout the British Isles. Its characteristic strong garlic smells permeates woods in the spring and early summer. Ramsons is a native bulb, and the name itself is believed to be extremely old, deriving from the Old English Hramsa, which also forms part of the name Ramsey in Essex, Isle of Man, etc..

Ramsons can totally dominate woodland floors in the manner of bluebells (which it often grows alongside).

Flower: Little (10 - 20 mm across) starry white 6 petalled in a big loose domed cluster of up to 20 flowers.
Leaves: Broad lanceolate, deep green smelling of garlic.
Habitat: Shaded places - hedgerows, woods.
Height to about 50 cm
Typically flowering: April - June
