In
1672 the MacKenzies of Wester Ross had seized the neighbouring Ardvreck
Castle from the MacLeods of Assynt. Calda House was built in 1726 by
the Kenneth MacKenzie, the Laird of Assynt, for his wife.
However the MacKenzies, for reasons of cash flow, were later forced to sell Calda House to the Earl of Sutherland - their enemy and a friend of the Macleods. Not to be outdone, supporters of the MacKenzies looted and burned down the house on 12th May 1737. |
| Calda House is believed
to be the first house of M-gabled design in the Northwest Highlands.
Although now in a ruinous state its previous glory is easy to imagine. |
