St.Peters Church, Heysham BU91 |
Enjoying
fine views across Morecambe Bay to the Lake District, St.Peters Church
at Heysham (close to Morecambe) is said to have been built in 637AD (ref.1),
976AD (ref.2), or 800 AD (ref.3). Whoever is correct, St. Peters Church
certainly has a very long history, which may date back to the earliest
Chistian times in northern England.
It adjoins the equally ancient
St.
Patrick's Chapel, which dates from the 8th Century AD.
|
| Some parts of the Anglo-Saxon
building dating from about 800AD remain, but most of the present building
dates from the 14th century and later.
The relatively recent porch has the interesting feature of incorporating 17th century date stones, two of which can be seen in the photo opposite. |
